Le coffret Back to the Garden propose de revivre la quasi-totalité du festival de Woodstock en temps quasi-réel. 433 titres sur 38 CDs de paix, d’amour et de musique !

« Le coffret Back to the Garden permettra à ceux qui n’étaient pas à Woodstock de s’en rappeler, et de rafraîchir la mémoire de ceux qui y étaient », proclame le communiqué de presse accompagnant la sortie cet été du document audio le plus complet jamais produit sur le festival de Woodstock.

Les producteurs Andy Zax et Steve Woolard ont réalisé ce tour de force dans un nouveau coffret 38-CDs de 433 titres offrant la reconstruction quasi-complète de Woodstock sur près de 36 heures, avec les performances de tous les groupes et artistes présentées de manière chronologique. Cette anthologie contient 267 titres jamais publiés pour un total de près de 20 heures de musique inédite. Pour la première fois, il sera donc possible de découvrir les sets de Crosby, Stills Nash & Young, The Band, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Blood Sweat & Tears et du Butterfield Blues Band avec un juvénile David Sanborn.

Le long chemin vers la reconstruction audio du festival a démarré par la recherche des 60 bandes multi-pistes enregistrés par Eddie Kramer et Lee Osborne et de la centaine de prises capturées par la console. L’édition de ces bandes – dont certaines avaient été coupées, mal référencées ou perdues – a pris, dans certains cas, plusieurs années de travail. “S’il y a bien une leçon que nous avons apprise avec Brian Kehew depuis que nous avons commencé à travailler sur ces bandes en 2005, c’est la suivante : vous ne pouvez pas les arranger », commente Andy Zax. « Mais c’est moins négatif que ça en a l’air, car une fois que vous avez compris qu’il est impossible d’améliorer le son de ces enregistrements, vous comprenez que ces bandes sont l’équivalent sonore des tomates anciennes — elles n’ont pas l’air parfaites, mais elles sont délicieuses. »

Édité à 1969 (!) exemplaires, le coffret Back to the Garden renfermant 38 CDs, le Blu-Ray du documentaire d’Albert Wadleigh, le livre Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music de Michael Lang et quelques pièces de memorablia sera disponible le 2 août. Pour le plus impatients (et les moins fortunés), Rhino publiera également deux autres éditions le 28 juin. Woodstock – Back to the Garden – 50th Anniversary Experience contient 162 titres sur 10 CDs et constitue la première édition incluant tous les artistes présents au festival. Woodstock 50 – Back To The Garden: The Anniversary Collection contient 42 titres et sera disponible en coffrets 3-CDs 5-LPs.
